International Travel Tips: Surviving on a Transatlantic Flight
After living overseas a few times and experiencing my fair share of international travel, I’ve picked up some tricks for making those long-haul journeys a little easier—and maybe even enjoyable. If you’re gearing up for a transatlantic adventure, here are my best tips for staying sane, hydrated, and ready to hit the ground running.

My Must-Haves for Every Flight
Here’s my tried-and-true list of essentials:
- Electrolyte Mixes: I’m obsessed with Ultima in pink lemonade. These little packets are lifesavers—just mix them with water for a quick hydration boost mid-flight.
- Antibacterial Wipes: Tray tables might get cleaned between flights, but let’s not kid ourselves. Wiping everything down—seatbelt, tray table, armrests—gives me peace of mind.
- Moisturizer and Eye Patches: Long flights are brutal on your skin. I skip most makeup (just a little mascara and lip gloss) and reapply moisturizer every couple of hours. If I’m feeling fancy, I’ll pack eye patches to use on the plane or once I’m at the hotel.
- Snacks: Airplane food can be a gamble, so I always bring something healthy and protein-packed. GoMacro bars and a bag of nuts are my go-tos. And don’t forget gum or mints for a post-meal refresh!
Before the Flight: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Flying dehydrates your body—there’s no way around it. So, start upping your water intake a day or two before you travel. Even if you’re already a water fanatic, drink more. Hydration is key to feeling good after 10+ hours in the air.
I also swear by loading up on vitamin C before a trip. Whatever your go-to is, just take it. I love Ener-C packets or even a good ol’ chewable vitamin. It can’t hurt to give your immune system a little boost.

The moment you land, switch to your new time zone. Forget about what time it is back home—it doesn’t matter anymore. My golden rule? Don’t nap. No matter how tempting it is, resist the urge.
Instead, get outside. Sunlight (or even just daylight) works wonders for resetting your internal clock. Go for a walk, explore your surroundings, or do something stimulating to keep yourself awake. Even if it’s cloudy, time outside is key.
